When a Passenger Fails to Show Up: A Battle of Operations and Chaos at the California Air National Guard BMT

In the fast-paced and often chaotic environment of military operations, instances of AWOL (Absent Without Leave) can sometimes lead to significant disruptions. Such an event not only affects the scheduled military movements but also poses serious security concerns, especially in times of heightened tensions. This article delves into one such memorable experience that occurred at the California Air National Guard Basic Military Training (BMT) camp.

The Situation at Akrotiri, Cyprus

While the experience detailed here isn't directly from the California Air National Guard, it's worth mentioning a similar incident that occurred earlier. A few years back, I was positioned in the picturesque salt flats of Akrotiri, Cyprus. Due to heavy rain, these salt flats had become a habitat once again for the iconic flamingos, a symbol agreed upon by all as a positive omen for military operations.

However, the positive outcome was overshadowed when one of these flamingos made a significant impact on a critical mission. A landing of a TriStar aircraft, intended to transport a regiment of Irish Rangers to Iraq or Afghanistan (I can't recall which exactly), was halted due to the disturbance caused by the flamingo. The plan was to load the necessary bags that afternoon, with a morning departure the following day.

Operational Hiccups and Standdowns

The aircraft inspection caused a delay, and as a result, the loading was delayed until late evening. Finally, when all was green, it was time to fulfill our role. The next morning, we had to load the final miscellaneous items and proceed for breakfast. But breakfast was quickly interrupted by a chef shouting for us, signaling that we were needed back at the aircraft.

Upon our arrival, we were met with the news that one of the passengers had gone missing. This was not an uncommon occurrence, especially in the context of heightened anti-terrorist measures. According to one of the military police (MPs), the individual had taken off like a Olympic sprinter. This incomplete scenario necessitated a complete unloading of all bags, laying them out on the apron, and having each Ranger stand by his respective baggage.

Managing Chaos and Ensuring Security

The bags had each been weighed, and the corresponding forms signed off, which added an element of discipline to the chaos. However, human nature prevailed, and as the Rangers moved their bags around, each for the comfort of standing next to a buddy, the situation turned into a complete mess. Identifying the missing bags and placing them in a secure area was a logistical nightmare.

The other bags were carefully reloaded, and the doors were secured. The now unaccompanied bags were then escorted by cops and ultimately onto the aircraft. The runner was located just outside the gate but returned willingly, apparently unaware of the next flight. He was escorted onto the aircraft, surrounded by MPs, reminiscent of a scene from the movie Con Air

The AWOL and Desertion Severity

In military terminology, a person who fails to show up for duty within a specified timeframe is often initially classified as AWOL. If the individual does not return after a certain period, they are then classified as deserters, which carries much more serious legal and military consequences.

Understanding the gravity of such situations, it's important for military personnel to fully comprehend the consequences of neglecting their duties. This experience not only highlights the importance of strict protocols and preparation in military operations but also underscores the critical need for communication and cooperation under pressure.

In conclusion, incidents such as these at the California Air National Guard BMT, while disrupting plans, serve as valuable learning experiences, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and the gravity of individual actions within a collaborative military environment.
