For household aluminum foil, which typically has a very thin thickness, the manufacturing process squeezes a double layer of foil to achieve the desired thickness. This process is necessary due to the machine tolerances for gears and cylinders. It is not possible to run a single layer of foil through the machine to achieve the household foil thinness.

The Role of Rollers

The rollers used to produce the foil play a crucial role in determining the foil's surface finish. Highly polished rollers leave the foil shiny on one side, while matte finish rollers result in a dull appearance on the other. This is because each side of the foil touches a different type of roller during the manufacturing process.

When separating the double layer of foil, each layer maintains its shiny and dull sides due to the way they were processed. The laminated layers are then wound up to create two rolls of foil, each with a shiny side and a dull side. Higher thickness foils can be processed as a single layer and thus will be shiny on both sides.

Reflectivity and Usage

There is a common misconception that the shiny and dull sides are related to reflectivity. However, the difference in shine is purely a result of the manufacturing process. Both sides of the foil are equally suitable for household use, and it doesn't matter whether the shiny or dull side is facing in or out when you use the foil.

The misconception about the shiny side being better for certain uses, such as cooking, has been debunked by chefs and experts. It is important to understand that the choice of side does not make a significant difference in the foil's performance.
