Unforgettable Words That Changed Lives: From Self-Discovery to Professional Insights
During my mid-teens, I was offered a profound piece of advice that would shape my life in ways I never imagined. A man, whom I had never met, said, 'Always be yourself.' Initially, I was puzzled. How could I be someone else? His words seemed straightforward, yet they carried a deeper meaning. Eventually, I understood that he was advising me to be true to myself, to be honest, and to act with integrity. Over the years, following this advice has allowed me to embrace who I am and to live without great regrets. To this day, I often reflect on those words and is reminded of their value.
Navigating Self-Discovery
It's a journey of discovery, and it's not always easy. Finding yourself can be a process of trial and error, and sometimes, it takes unexpected advice to guide us in the right direction. The man's words were my compass, and they led me to the understanding that to truly be yourself, you must embrace your nuances and imperfections. This journey of self-discovery is a continuous one, and it's reassuring to know that there's more to life than the external expectations.
A Journey Through Therapy
My journey into the world of therapy began as a young psychologist. At 24, I was an intern on my path to earning my doctorate degree. I was filled with confidence and thought I knew everything. However, I soon realized that my knowledge was limited and that there was much more to learn. My supervisor, a bearded, glasses-wearing man who reminded me of a cinematic psychologist, was always a source of wisdom and guidance. Despite his quiet nature, his words were profound and always worth listening to.
Meeting the Client
I once had a client who was in his 40s and had been caught cheating on his wife. While his marriage was deteriorating, he initially appeared energetic and focused. However, after a few sessions, his demeanor changed. He became disheveled, spoke slowly, and seemed worried about losing his wife. Initially, he minimised his issues and claimed that his wife was just 'never happy.' It wasn’t until we delved deeper into the details of his infidelity that I began to suspect something more serious.
Unraveling the Truth
Further discussion revealed that his trips to Vegas were impromptu, and he often spent all his money or used his credit card to gamble more. He disclosed that he sometimes hired prostitutes and stayed with them all weekend, buying expensive gifts and even giving them money to gamble with. Initially, I suspected bipolar disorder, as his episodic behavior was highly indicative of the condition. However, when I suggested that he be evaluated by our psychiatrist, he became extremely angry and dismissed my claims, citing my lack of experience.
The heated argument continued in the clinic lobby, where his dissatisfaction with my diagnosis was expressed to the receptionist. Anger and defiance seemed to consume him, and he insisted that he would not return to therapy. I entered my supervisor's office feeling both angry and frustrated. He met me with curiosity and listened to my account of the situation, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor.
The Supervisor's Insight
My supervisor, Richard, was a man of few words but immense wisdom. He nodded in his characteristic manner and then said, 'You know, Richard, you are one of the brightest young therapists I’ve ever had the pleasure of supervising. Your assessment skills are exceptional. Better than many therapists I know who have...'
With these words, he reminded me that no matter how daunting or challenging the situation, my understanding and skills were invaluable. His support was both validating and encouraging, and it helped me to maintain my perspective and continue with the therapy despite the patient's resistance.
