Traveling Between Denmark and Sweden with a Single Entry Schengen Visa: A Comprehensive Guide

Can You Travel to Sweden from Denmark for a Day with a Single Entry Vi

Can You Travel to Sweden from Denmark for a Day with a Single Entry Visa Then Head Back to Denmark Without Any Issues?

Yes, if you hold a valid single-entry Schengen visa that was issued by Denmark, you are allowed to travel to Sweden for a day and then return to Denmark. However, it's important to note that a single-entry visa permits you to enter the Schengen Area only once. Once you leave the Schengen Area, for example, by returning to Denmark, you cannot re-enter without a new visa.

If your visa allows multiple entries, then free movement is permitted between the countries within the Schengen Area. It is always advisable to carry your visa and any required documentation with you while traveling.

Historical Experiences of Border Checks

Three of my most recent trips from Denmark to Sweden did not encounter any border checks, with no one present to do any form of checking. This suggests that, at least in certain circumstances, the absence of border controls may mean that even if you don't have a visa, it would not be noticed.

Due to the free movement within the Schengen Area, which is part of the European Union (EU), you can travel between Sweden and Denmark with no visa or documentation. However, as a foreign national in Denmark, a visa granted there does not automatically confer the right to travel to Sweden. Yet, since border checks are virtually non-existent, it wouldn't typically cause issues unless you attract the attention of authorities.

Legal Aspects and Conditions

If you hold a Schengen visa, you are permitted to travel within the Schengen area as many times as you wish, provided that:

The visa remains valid.

You respect the number of days you are allowed to stay within the Schengen area.

If you are in Denmark and travel to Sweden, and then return to Denmark, you remain within the Schengen area for the entirety of the trip. Therefore, it is legal to do this, even with a single-entry visa, because you never leave the Schengen area.

You can make a day trip, or you can stay in Sweden for up to a couple of days, as per your visa conditions.

Note: When traveling from Copenhagen to Malm? by train, there is an inspection. You will be asked to show your ID, so simply present your passport with your Schengen visa, and you should be allowed to continue your journey without any issues.

Please be informed that if someone states you are not allowed to travel this way, or if they claim it is risky but possible, they are incorrect. It is both legal and not risky in any way as long as you adhere to the conditions of your single-entry visa.

PS: Once you leave the Schengen area, your visa cannot be used again, as it permits only one entry.

Current Status Due to the Corona Virus

EDIT 2020: Due to the corona virus, the borders between Schengen member countries are now closed. These borders remain closed for an undetermined period while measures to control the spread of the virus are being implemented. It is advisable to check the latest updates from official sources for any changes or further information.

This situation highlights the importance of always verifying travel regulations and border policies, especially during times of global health crises.
