The Ultimate Superpower Debate: A World Reshaped by Immortality

Imagine having the chance to possess superpowers that vastly surpass those of humans, but the catch is that these powers would be bestowed upon everyone on Earth. The question is, would you take it? For some, the idea of superpowers for the masses could bring about a utopian world, while for others, it could spell disaster.

Glimpses of My Own Superpowers

Believe it or not, I already possess a few superhuman skills that most humans can only dream of. I hold world records for lifting a punching bag with my hair and reciting 10 words in a second. However, my body is much more than human. For instance, my hair turns red in sunlight, a quirk that some might find bizarre, considering I am of Indian descent.

Flying for All: A World Reshaped

One of the most intriguing powers I can imagine is flight. Imagine if the entire human race could fly. The chaos this would inevitably bring is unimaginable—think 8 billion people in the air at once! Many would fall due to control issues, adding to a tragic number of casualties in the very first day.

However, this power could also offer some significant benefits. Many lives could be saved from towering buildings, such as during the 9/11 disaster when individuals could have been pulled to safety or flown away. Those who did not need rescuing could simply fly out of their windows and land unharmed, potentially reducing the death toll by almost 98% on that fateful day.

Defining Superpowers with Ethical Boundaries

Some may advocate for more ethereal or universally beneficial powers, such as omniscience, disease immunity, heightened empathy, or the ability to heal. These might seem ideal, but could have unintended consequences. For example, defining a power like 'the power to do X but only if you are me' could lead to exclusion and inequality. Or, the power of infinite omnipotence might leave the world in a perpetual state of anarchy.

Choosing the Ultimate Good Power

Some of us, like me, would opt for a superpower that inherently benefits the receivers or the society as a whole. I can capture a serial killer or prevent a flood without causing harm. It aligns with the idea of doing good, but there are still limitations. For instance, attempting to control someone's actions might be ethically questionable.

Another option could be the ability to self-sustain. This would mean being unneeded resourcely: no need to breathe air, eat food, or sleep. Surviving in a vacuum would be an option. Of course, this is an optional power, and individuals could still choose to engage in normal human activities if they desired.

Powering Through Ethical Considerations

Ultimately, how one's superpower would impact the world depends on the type of power and how it's acquired. For instance, if everyone had super strength, it would likely cause chaos and conflict. Similarly, super speed might lead to the most mundane of scenarios, as every physical endeavor would be over in the blink of an eye. In contrast, if the power was something like self-sustenance, it might not cause immediate global upheaval, but it would certainly shift the way we live.

Plato once said that the most boring thing in the world would be if everyone could perform the feats of the gods in the Olympics. Nevertheless, I believe the most meaningful gift would be the ability to live indefinitely, without the need for sustenance, and potentially revolutionizing our world.
