The Significance of Class 12th Marks in Real Life: Fact vs. Fiction
Every year, countless high school seniors in India grapple with the question: Do class 12th marks really matter in real life? This question has prompted many to express their opinions on social media, forums, and personal interactions. My personal experience as a student in Uttar Pradesh, where I scored 89 in the 10th and 82 in the 12th, offers some insights.
My Perspective on Class 12th Marks
Upon completing my 10th in 2020 and 12th in 2022, I was enrolled in a well-known college in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Admittedly, my marks were commendable, especially in the context of the UP Board. However, the impact of these marks on real life is minimal. Individuals with lower scores than mine have achieved greater success, even higher up the academic ladder.
While 10th marks serve only as a basis for DOB verification for official documents, 12th marks are more crucial. However, due to universities adopting entrance exams and setting a minimum marks requirement often around 75, the reliance on 12th marks has reduced. This shift in focus has led to a discussion about the true significance of these grades.
My Observations and Experiences
I have witnessed numerous posts of students contemplating suicide due to poor exam results. It is essential to recognize that achieving a good score brings temporary happiness but fails to secure lasting contentment. Conversely, receiving lower marks may subject you to criticism from relatives and family. Nevertheless, it is important to understand that "log to kahenge unka to kamm hi h kahana"—people will always find reasons to judge you regardless of your performance.
From personal experience, it is evident that marks matter. Yet, their impact varies significantly across different contexts:
For JEE Aspirants: In order to participate in the JEE Advanced, a candidate must secure at least 75% in the 10th and 12th grades. For NEET Aspirants: To appear for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), one must achieve a minimum of 50% in the 12th marks. In Competitive Admissions: For universities like DU, BHU, SRCC, Hindu, Hansraj, St. Stephens, Miranda House, LSR, and more, class 12th marks still hold considerable weight. Particularly after the introduction of CUET, the 12th marks may be used for tie breakers. For Management Entrance Exams: Marks from both the 10th and 12th grades are crucial. IIMs utilize a weighted approach alongside CAT scores, personal interviews, and group discussions. Conclusion
While class 12th marks do have real-life significance, especially in the admission process for higher education, they are not the only determinant of future success. It is crucial to focus on continuous learning, resilience, and hard work. The journey to success is filled with challenges, but facing and overcoming these obstacles is what truly matters.
Remember, the mountain you have climbed is just one among many. Each step forward brings you closer to your goals, and the road ahead is filled with opportunities to grow and thrive beyond your current achievements.
