During the 1930s, the United States experienced one of the most significant environmental disasters in its history: the Dust Bowl. The decade was marked by unusually hot temperatures and severe drought, leading to crop failures and the exposure of the soil. Early farmers, known as "sod busters," used plows to break through this natural barrier, often without replacement, leading to the exposure of the soil.
