The Multiverse After the Crisis on Infinite Earths: A New Reality for Earth-Prime
At the end of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, a range of different Earths were depicted. However, in the subsequent episodes of The Flash and Supergirl, it was said that the multiverse was destroyed, only Earth-Prime remains. This raises the question: What exactly is the status of the multiverse now?
Earth-Prime's Singular Reality
According to recent developments, the multiverse is no longer expansive; it has been heavily condensed. In the new multiverse, it's unlikely that any other Earths with variants of Earth-Prime exist. For instance, Wells, a significant figure across various Earths, now seems to be the sole host in the multiverse, completely replacing all other manifestations.
Travel Between Worlds in the New Multiverse
Since the multiverse is considerably less populated and more condensed, interdimensional travel has become more challenging. Characters like the heroes of Earth-Prime, who used to effortlessly step between worlds, now find themselves on what they perceive as a solitary Earth. It’s assumed that the multiverse has entirely disappeared. However, the truth is that a few other Earths still exist; the inhabitants of Earth-Prime just aren't aware of this yet.
Technically Dramatic Irony
This situation is an interesting case where the audience has more knowledge than the characters. While it could be classified as a form of dramatic irony, it doesn't actually impact the characters' current decisions or choices.
The Redistribution of the Multiverse
The act of the Spectre and the Paragons rebirthing the universe can be viewed in two ways. Firstly, it could mean that the multiverse as we knew it no longer exists, and the glimpses of alternative worlds were just intended for the audience's benefit. Alternatively, the multiverse could have been reborn, but its structure has undergone a significant transformation. The frequencies and complexities are different, meaning Earth-Prime dwellers cannot detect other universes.
The Multiverse Still Exists
While it appears Earth-Prime is alone, the multiverse still exists. Pre-crisis methods for finding, communicating with, or teleporting to other Earths are no longer applicable. For instance, the Earths used to vibrate at different frequencies, a method that is now lost. It’s possible the frequencies are different now or that the method is entirely magical. We’ll uncover the truth when the characters do.
In conclusion, the multiverse is alive and well, but it’s in a state of heavy condensation and transformation. The heroes of Earth-Prime might not know it yet, but the multiverse is still a reality, hidden from their perception for now.
