The Impact of Working in a Maximum Security Prison: Can You Stay Unaffected?
Can a corrections officer truly remain unaffected by the experiences and environment of a maximum security prison? This question has been debated for years, but the answer largely depends on individual factors such as mental resilience, support systems, and personal growth.
Understanding Corrections Officers
Corrections Officers: Often seen as the lowest form of law enforcement, corrections officers, or COs, have historically faced a reputation that is not entirely aligned with their role. Unlike regular law enforcement, they are tasked with maintaining security in often chaotic and stressful environments. Their work is emotional and physically demanding, making them uniquely positioned to witness and internalize some of the worst aspects of society.
Experiences in a Maximum Security Prison
I have worked for nearly 27 years, spending 19 of those years in a maximum security prison. During this time, I witnessed the darkest parts of society, interactions that stayed with me long after I left the facility. The environment creates a unique challenge for inmates and staff alike. Maximum security and death row inmates, often confined to their cells with restraints, present a different set of challenges compared to other security levels. The most stressful factor, however, is not the inmates or the environment but the fellow workers, many of whom are seen as sociopaths or emotionally unstable individuals.
Psychological Impact and Resilience
The question arises: can a corrections officer truly remain unaffected by such an environment? Studies and personal experience suggest that prolonged exposure will invariably have an impact. The more stressful the situation, the more profound the effect on mental health. Individual mental stability at the beginning of the job plays a crucial role in how one processes these experiences.
First-hand Experience: The Journey to Overcoming
After working for 19 years in a maximum security prison, I have seen firsthand how exposure to such an environment can reshape one's outlook and behavior. For me, witnessing the worst aspects of society stayed with me long after I was in that setting. With help from friends and family, I recognized the signs of my own emotional distress and sought assistance. I lived through a period where I became extremely violent, eventually threatening even my close friends and family. Despite their lack of direct harm from my actions, they were significantly impacted by my outbursts.
After receiving professional help and learning to control my temper, I made a significant life change. Retiring from the corrections job, I turned my life around. Now, I have compassion for strangers, volunteer to help those in need, and enjoy each day without the constant stress and fear that once defined my life. While I still have to sit in rooms with my back to the wall occasionally, the overall impact of my previous work has subsided significantly.
The Long-term Outlook
Research and personal experience suggest that corrections officers, especially those working in maximum security prisons, may face significant psychological challenges. The statistics show that many corrections officers struggle with post-traumatic stress and often do not enjoy the same longevity as citizens in other professions. However, with the right support and interventions, former corrections officers can achieve significant personal growth and a better quality of life post-retirement.
In conclusion, while it is difficult to remain completely unaffected by the environment of a maximum security prison, with the right support and self-awareness, corrections officers can navigate through their experiences and move on to a fulfilling life after retirement. The journey is not always easy, but with the right guidance and personal growth, a better future is achievable.
