Stipend Amounts for Students at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)

The stipend amounts for students at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) vary based on the program and the student's level of study. These figures can help prospective students and their families understand the financial support available to them.

Stipend Amounts at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)

For PhD students, the stipend is typically around Rs. 31,000 to 35,000 per month, which may be supplemented by additional funds for research or teaching assistance. This stipend is designed to cover essential living expenses while the student focuses on their research and thesis work.

For masters programs, students may receive a stipend of around Rs. 10,000 to 12,000 per month, depending on the specific program and funding availability. These stipends can be quite helpful for covering daily expenses and reducing the financial burden on the students.

At CMI, PhD students generally receive a stipend of around Rs. 30,000 to 35,000 per month. This amount helps them with their day-to-day living expenses and research operations. Additionally, CMI also provides opportunities for research assistance, which can further supplement the stipend.

For masters students, stipends may vary, but they often receive around Rs. 10,000 to 12,000 per month. These stipends cover basic living expenses and aid in financing the cost of education.

Personal Experiences in CMI

During my BSc years at CMI from 2015 to 2018, I received a stipend of Rs. 5,000 per month during the 8 months of classes and none during the 4 vacation months. I received it monthly, making it easier to manage finances without disruption.

During my MSc CS years at CMI from 2018 to 2020, the stipend system was different. I received a stipend of Rs. 9,000 per month during the 8 months of classes, but only Rs. 6,000 was paid monthly, with the remaining 3,000 paid at the end of each semester. This setup aimed to accommodate financial planning and personal needs.

Financial Support at ISI

At the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), earlier the stipend for Bachelors students was Rs. 3,000 per month, with an additional Rs. 3,000 annual contingency grant, bringing the total to Rs. 6,000 per month. For Masters students, the stipend was Rs. 5,000 per month, with an annual contingency grant of Rs. 5,000. Recently, these figures have been revised to Rs. 5,000 for Bachelors and Rs. 8,000 for Masters. Notably, there is no tuition fee at ISI, which means the stipend effectively adds to the financial benefit, allowing students to save money on education.

Hostel and Additional Costs at CMI

At CMI, undergraduate students receive a stipend of Rs. 5,000 per month for a period of 8 months, if awarded a scholarship. For students pursuing Math or CS degrees at the masters level, the stipend is Rs. 6,000 per month for an 8-month period. Additionally, there is a mandatory payment of Rs. 25,000 per semester for hostel and food, which covers accommodation and meal expenses, ensuring a comfortable living environment for students.

The stipend amounts and financial support provided by these institutes can significantly impact the student experience and academic success. Prospective students are encouraged to check the official websites or contact the institutes directly for the most current information on stipends and financial support.
