Why the 30mm Gun May Not Be a Necessity
Unless a massive auto-cannon with "smart rounds" can be developed, the 30mm gun may not offer the precision and control needed to target ground troops effectively. Traditional splatter zones are an inefficient way to ensure the optimal placement of rounds, which is essential when taking out a small number of opponents on the ground. Furthermore, the A-10 cannot 'bust' heavy Russian tanks, although it can certainly cause significant damage to one.
The Role of Modern Precision Weapons
The A-10 is being replaced by modern aircraft that can quickly enter a target area and deploy accurate munitions, thus hitting pinpoint locations. Rather than spraying hundreds of 30mm rounds, modern strike aircraft can use GPS-guided bombs or precision missiles to eliminate enemy fighters more effectively. This approach is both more accurate and less expensive in the long run compared to risking a Close Air Support (CAS) aircraft.
The AC-130 and Other Options
The AC-130 could be a viable alternative, as it can deploy both accurate cannon fire and high-explosive ordnance. However, it does not have the advantage of speed. For faster CAS support, options like F-16, F-15E, B-1B, and F-35 are available. These aircraft can carry large payloads and navigate air defense systems more effectively.
The Future of CAS: Helicopters, Drones, and UCAVs
For quicker CAS, modern fighter jets are more suitable as they can arrive at the target area faster and launch precision munitions. In addition to these, helicopters, such as the AC-130 and MQ-9 Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), are also crucial for providing loitering support and handling dangerous environments.

While the A-10 was groundbreaking in its day, its reliance on outdated technology suggests that modern principles of close air support can be better implemented through aircraft with superior speed, payload capacity, and ability to handle modern threats.
