Placement Insights: Industrial Engineering Management at IIT KGP

Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) is a rapidly evolving field that demands technical expertise along with managerial skills. Students pursuing in IEM at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP), have been experiencing remarkable success in their placement endeavors. Success Stories and Statistics

My batch of 2020-22 completed their in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (IM) at IIT KGP, and the placements were nothing short of exceptional. During the placement season, which is conducted in two phases, our entire batch was placed within the first four days of the Phase-1 placements. The highest package offered to any student was Rs. 25LPA, reflecting the high demand for talent in this specialized field.

On average, the package offered to our batch was Rs. 15LPA, which is quite generous considering the opportunities available. This success is attributed to the high quality of teaching and the practical exposure that students receive through internships and projects. Additionally, students were successful in securing offers from top-tier companies such as Barclays, Axis Bank, Infoedge, General Mills, ExL, and Kotak Securities, among others.

Job Profiles and Companies

The job profiles that IEM students have secured speak volumes about the versatility of their skills. A wide range of positions is available, including Consultant, Data Engineer, Software Developer, Supply Chain Analyst, and Data Scientist. These varied roles highlight the diverse applications of industrial engineering and management principles in today's industry.

Furthermore, students have also been offered paid internships from companies like Swiggy, Delhivery, and Eli Lilly. These internships offer stipends ranging from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 40,000, providing valuable real-world experience and financial support.

The Reality of Placement at IIT KGP

Conversely, placement outcomes can vary depending on individual effort, dedication, and circumstances. As a Sponsored Candidate IEM student at IIT KGP from 2011-13, my experience echoed the reality that not all IITians are placed during the placement season. Few students from my IEM batch managed to secure placements, while others opted for PhD programs or joined as lecturers in engineering colleges.

The success of placements is often directly linked to hard work, commitment, and dedication. Departments such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communication (ECE), and Mechanical have seen a higher number of placements in the past. However, the opportunities for IEM students are steadily increasing due to the growing demand for specialized engineering management skills.
