What Was Your Most Memorable Experience?

Indeed, one of the most memorable experiences I had was meeting the great Abdul Kalam in 2010, when he was still alive. His gentle, decent, and humble character was truly inspiring. He dedicated his entire life to the youth and development of children, which is a true testament to the greatness of a good, kind, and dignified human. To have a memory with such an admirable person is a humbling experience.

But I also cherish another experience that is closer to a spontaneous rescue from my everyday life. It was a sunny lunchtime when I sought to pick up my three beloved daughters from primary school. The journey to the Autosonic Record Bar was short and peaceful, just as I often enjoyed driving the scenic back road to the school. The trip usually took less time and minimal traffic compared to the main road.

Accident at the Bridge

Upon returning home, I proceeded to drive my three girls to school, where the girls were already waiting by the side entrance. As I climbed into my Chev Kommando station wagon, I hugged them tightly, each one eager to share their day. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a young girl in school uniform on her bicycle approaching the bridge. The bridge was newly reopened, spanning the railway tracks, and I was glad to bypass the old bridge that was notorious for its delays. I was also impressed that they had finally resurfaced the shorter and less trafficked route.

As I approached the bridge, I noticed that the road was still littered with rough, loose gravel. I was watching my rearview mirror carefully, trying to ensure that no other vehicles or pedestrians were crossing. Just then, I saw the young girl pedaling faster than she should have, heading straight for a dangerous descent. My heart raced as I realized the impending disaster. I instinctively shouted, “She’s going to have an...” before she veered off her bicycle, landing in a heap of bent metal and scrap fabric.

Rescue and Heartbreak

The young girl was sobbing uncontrollably, her hands and legs shredded from the fall. Fortunately, I didn’t see any broken bones, but the pain was evident in her expression. My girls quickly lent a hand, helping her into the car as I carefully loaded the mangled bicycle. We drove the short distance to her home, where we walked her to the front door.

The door was answered by her mother, who immediately began raising her voice in anger. It seemed she was blind to the girl’s obvious pain and her own daughter’s bloodied knees and elbows. All she was concerned about was the damaged wheel on the bicycle and dirt on her daughter’s clothes. Without a word of thanks for our intervention, we hurried back to our car, disheartened but ready to move on.

This encounter reinforced my belief that not all mothers are the same. While some display incredible kindness and compassion, others can be deeply heartless in the face of such dire situations.
