Is Joining Cognizant for a 20 LPA Package Safe in 2024?

The decision to join Cognizant with a 20 LPA package in 2024 is not without its challenges, particularly when it comes to career stability and project availability. This article delves into the realities of working at Cognizant, revealing the potential risks involved, especially in terms of job security and the pressure faced near the end of project timelines.

Risk of Practical Ageing

One of the most significant concerns when joining Cognizant is the risk of practical ageing, a term that refers to the unofficial period during which employees are let go if they surpass a certain age without a project. According to my experience, this period is often around 35 days from the time a project ends. During this time, business conditions play a crucial role in determining job availability. In some cases, projects may be abundant, allowing employees to choose the most suitable role. However, in other situations, the demand for bench (unassigned) employees can be high, making it difficult to find a billable role.

Managerial Pressures and Bench Periods

The bench period, or the time when an employee is not assigned to a project, can be particularly stressful. I personally experienced this when my manager from Cognizant Transformation Services (CTS) called me about two months into my bench period. They expressed concern about my career and suggested that for the best interest of my career, I consider resigning. Fortunately, I was able to find a position just in time, but the pressure was immense. The fear of not finding a project, especially close to the end of a project, is a constant stressor. It's like carrying a sword over your head, always knowing that the situation could worsen at any moment.

Opting for Other Offers

Given the uncertainties and potential risks, it might be wise to consider other offers before joining Cognizant. The pressure to find a project to secure your position can be overwhelmingly stressful, and the quality of your work and job security may be compromised. One key piece of advice would be to explore other opportunities and be prepared to leave Cognizant as soon as you find a better fit. This approach can provide you with more stability and a safer career path.

While Cognizant offers a lucrative 20 LPA package, the potential risks, including practical ageing, bench periods, and managerial pressure, should not be dismissed. Consider these factors carefully to ensure a safer and more stable career in the long run.
