According to data analysis by Hardik Khatri, a data analyst at Opensignal, users in India have already experienced average upload speeds that are much faster with 5G compared to 4G services. Currently, India ranks 117th in the world for mobile download speeds at 13.52 Mbps. This gap between existing speeds and the new 5G capabilities underscores the transformative potential of the technology.
Actual 5G Demos and Rollout Phases
One of the latest results from an actual 5G demo held in Hyderabad showcases the impressive speeds that will soon be available to Indian users. While factors such as increased network traffic may slow down speeds, the average 5G mobile speed is expected to be at least 80 Mbps. Several use cases of 5G have already been successfully tested in India, with more expected to follow after the commercial rollout.
5G Airwave Frequencies and Speeds
Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading digital service providers, has recently acquired a range of airwave bands to facilitate the 5G rollout. The airwave bands include:
N-28 (700 MHz): This band is expected to deliver speeds of up to 400 Mbps in practice, around 150-300 Mbps, and can cover long distances with just one antenna tower due to its propagation distance. N-78 (3.3 GHz): This band, bought by companies like Jio, Aero, and VI, can provide speeds of 750-1000 Mbps if service providers install more antennas to cover wide areas. N-258 (26 GHz): Known as millimetre Wave, this band can transmit signals in a few meters with very high speeds, around 5 Gbps. Interfaces like stadiums, auditoriums, business parks, and open spaces are ideal for this technology due to its limited penetration through walls and glass. N-3 (1800 MHz): This lower frequency band can offer around 400 Mbps speeds, making it effective for wide coverage and penetration through obstacles.The data indicates that as the frequency increases, so does the speed, but signal propagation decreases. This means that higher frequencies can travel shorter distances but offer very high speeds, making them ideal for specific use cases in open spaces.
