How to Change Your Keyboard Layout from Azerty to Qwerty

Are you a user in France or Belgium, accustomed to the Azerty layout, and now need to switch to the more widely used Qwerty? This article will guide you through the process for Windows, macOS, and Linux Ubuntu. Follow these step-by-step instructions to switch your keyboard layout accordingly.

Windows

Switching your keyboard layout to Qwerty on Windows 10 is straightforward. Here’s how:

Open the Settings menu: Press Windows I. Select Time Language from the sidebar. Click on Language. Under Preferred languages, click the Options button. Select Keyboards. Under Keyboard layouts, you should see the Azerty layout. Click on it, then select Remove Azerty. To add the Qwerty layout, follow these steps: Select Install a keyboard. Select United States or US from the list of languages. Click Add. Your keyboard layout should now be set to Qwerty.

macOS

On macOS, you can change your keyboard layout via System Preferences:

Open System Preferences from the Dock. Select Keyboard from the list. Click on the Input Sources tab. Click the button to add a new input source. Search for United States - ABC (QWERTY). Select Remove Azerty in the list of input sources. Your new layout will display as Qwerty.

Linux Ubuntu

Changing the keyboard layout on Linux Ubuntu can be done via Settings:

Open the Settings application. Click on Region Language. Click on Input Sources in the Language column on the left. Click the button to add a new layout. Search for United States - ABC (QWERTY). Select Remove Azerty and click Remove. Your new layout will display as Qwerty.

Mobile Devices: iOS/Android

On mobile devices, the process is slightly different for iOS and Android:

For iOS Devices:

Go to Settings General Keyboard Keyboards. Tap on the United States or US keyboard to enable it. Tap the Remove button next to the Azerty layout.

For Android Devices:

Go to Settings System Languages input Virtual keyboard Gboard or your keyboard app. Tap on US - QWERTY Tap the Remove button next to the Azerty layout.

Regional Differences

Some users may be accustomed to the Canadian French/Quebec keyboard, which features a Qwerty layout. If you’re from a country or region with the Azerty layout, such as France or Belgium, you may need to get used to the Qwerty keyboard or install the Azerty layout.

Adding Additional Keyboard Layouts

In some cases, you might want to add multiple keyboard layouts to your system for convenience. Here’s how to do it:

For both Windows and macOS, you can add a new layout as explained in the sections above. For Linux Ubuntu, you can follow the steps to add a new layout via the Input Sources tab.

After setting up a new layout, you can switch between them using the Input Indicator on Windows and the built-in switcher on macOS. On mobile devices, you can switch between layouts via the keyboard settings.

Remember, switching layouts may reconfigure some of your keyboard keys, so ensure that you experiment with the new layout before committing to it. Happy typing!
