From 4 LPA to 12 LPA or More: My Journey and Strategies
From 4 LPA to 12 LPA or More: My Journey and Strategies
I share my personal journey where I started with a modest salary of only 4 LPA in an IT company and grew to earn more than 12 LPA in subsequent roles. This article will outline the key factors and steps that contributed to my salary progression, providing valuable insights for others seeking career advancement in the Indian IT market.
Initial Struggles and Learning
After completing my Masters in Computer Applications, I faced a challenging year and a half. My academic background in Commerce made it difficult to find a job as a fresher. I enrolled in a few courses in hopes of gaining some programming knowledge, but the lack of practical experience further delayed my career. I struggled to find employment, and although I eventually graduated with a degree, I did not secure a job.
First Breakthrough
My friend, who was working at IBM, took the initiative to help me gain entry into the industry. He taught me the basics of a relevant technology and, in a masterstroke of strategy, posed my skill set to recruiters as if I had three years of experience. He even conducted a telephonic interview on my behalf and I made it through the on-site interview. When it came to discussing my salary expectations, I was initially asked to negotiate, but I was firm in my stance and ended up receiving an offer of 6.5 LPA.
Initially, I settled for the 6.5 LPA, but after working for four years and gaining significant experience, I secured a 10 LPA offer at IBM. I made the most of this opportunity, working for eight months before hesitating due to a desire for more outside opportunities.
Strategizing for a Higher Salary
After working for IBM for eight months, I transitioned to another company. With a combined experience of over five years, including two years at IBM, I negotiated a salary of 12 LPA. This journey taught me several important lessons that are crucial for anyone aiming to see a significant increase in their salary in the Indian IT market.
Key Strategies for Salary Increase
Gaining Specialized Skills: In my case, gaining hands-on experience with specific technologies (like IBM's technology) helped me stand out. Employers often pay more for specialized skills, especially in high-demand areas like cloud computing, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Consider enrolling in advanced courses or obtaining certifications in these areas. Proving Management and Leadership Potential: As I progressed, I transitioned to more responsible roles that required leadership and management skills. Demonstrating these skills can lead to higher compensation, as companies value the ability to manage and lead teams. Seeking Opportunities at Tier-One Companies: Working for well-established companies can command higher salaries. I moved from a smaller company to IBM, which is a tier-one brand, and this move was a significant factor in my salary increase. Networking and Leveraging Internships: My initial misunderstandings led to a creative solution. Networking and leveraging internships or coursework can provide unique chances to showcase your abilities and potentially gain more experience, which can boost your salary negotiating power. Understanding Market Rates: It's essential to know the going rate for roles with your experience and qualifications. Research and stay updated with industry trends to ensure you're asking for a fair and competitive salary.Lessons Learned and Final Thoughts
This journey has taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of continuous learning. While the path from 4 LPA to 12 LPA or more is not linear and varies based on individual circumstances, the strategies outlined here can be adapted to suit different career trajectories. Success stories like mine are not uncommon, and with the right approach, you too can achieve significant salary growth in the Indian IT market.
Remember, persistence, skill development, and strategic moves are key to achieving your career goals. As you navigate your journey, stay informed about industry trends and continuously seek opportunities to enhance your skills and experiences. Good luck!
