Experiencing and Combating Ragging at SOE CUSAT

Ragging, a form of hazing, can be a troubling issue at many institutions, and the School of Engineering (SOE) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is no exception. Type-1: Linguistic Jokes and Corrections

Some seniors might use linguistic humor as a form of ragging. They would test the student's language skills by asking for introductions in both Hindi and English. If the student stumbles or makes a mistake, the seniors would continue to correct until the student gives a flawless introduction. This process could be repeated as many as ten times. It sounds like a playful yet frustrating experience for the student.

Type-2: Academic Hazing

In other instances, seniors might assign tasks to the freshmen, such as writing assignments. However, the rewards are minimal, and the main purpose is to irritate and humiliate the student. There is little to no compensation or recognition for completing these assignments. This form of ragging can lead to a sense of inequity and resentment.

Type-3: Profoundly Demeaning Experiences

The most severe form of ragging involves deeply degrading and sexualized acts. One individual recounts being ragged in a group of three by seniors from the Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) departments. The experiences include:

Being asked to provide commentary on live pornographic videos.

Taking part in crude role-playing exercises, such as playing the role of a sex prostitute and a customer, with a monetary transaction.

Performing degrading acts, such as bending at the knees and showing disrespect repeatedly.

These incidents are not only traumatic but also illegal and should be reported to the authorities.

Addressing the Issue

The CUSAT has taken steps to mitigate the prevalence of ragging. Anti-ragging policies have been put in place to provide a safer and more inclusive environment. These policies typically include:

Strict penalties for those who engage in ragging.

Strict monitoring and surveillance to prevent incidents of ragging.

Procedural guidelines for reporting and addressing ragging incidents.

Support services for students who have experienced or witnessed ragging.
