While many people associate semiconductors with computer chips, these components are indeed ubiquitous in a myriad of electronic devices. From vintage analog meters from the 1950s to modern automotive entertainment systems, semiconductors are an integral part of our technological landscape. This article explores a variety of semiconductor devices that do not fall under the category of computer chips.
Vintage Semiconductor Devices
The Simpson analog multimeter from the 1950s is a prime example of a device that relies on semiconductors without utilizing computer chips. Unlike its digital counterparts, an analog meter excels in detecting fluctuating voltages, providing a more intuitive and detailed reading. These analog meters often use simple semiconductors like diodes and transistors to perform their measurements, highlighting the versatility of semiconductor devices beyond just electronic circuits.
Electrical Components Without Integrated Circuits (ICs)
Another example of electronic devices that do not contain integrated circuits (ICs) or computer chips is relatively less complex. Components such as switches, condenser microphones, and diodes are frequently used in older electronics. These devices often feature basic semiconductor components that can function effectively without the need for more complex ICs. For instance, a condenser microphone might use a diode for signal processing, or a switch might rely on a simple transistor to actuate its contacts.
Automotive and Industrial Electrons
With over 44 years of experience as a semiconductor engineer, my work has often involved explaining my role in a simpler, more relatable way: working on "computer chips." However, the true scope of my work encompasses much more than that. For the last two decades, my focus has been on automotive components such as entertainment systems, power control modules, and driver components for engines and transmissions. These components are essential in managing the vast electrical systems throughout a vehicle, including lighting, doors, windows, heating, and air conditioning.
In addition to automotive electronics, there has been a significant push towards fully electrified vehicles and autonomous driving. This field requires a myriad of sensor and networking components to connect and interact with various systems, including the semiconductor devices mentioned previously.
