Efficient Utilization of Pre-Session Time: A Journey to Preparation

After admission, many students find themselves grappling with the balance between enjoying the remaining days before the academic session starts and preparing for what lies ahead. This reflects a common challenge faced by new students as they navigate the transition from high school to college. In this article, we explore strategies to maximize the precious pre-session time to ensure a smoother transition into the academic year.

The Declining Frequency of Reading

Upon admission, it is common for students to immerse themselves in their studies, often reading daily for a few hours. Over time, this frequency decreases dramatically. As mentioned, I used to read extensively once every day. Gradually, this reduced to once a week, and now it has almost vanished. Books, once lined up in neat rows, now lie untouched, collecting dust. The initial enthusiasm wanes, making it crucial to find new strategies to keep your motivation high.

Current Activities and Their Impact

My current pre-session activities have included various forms of relaxation and entertainment. Reading a classic like Pride and Prejudice has been one of my favorite pastimes, especially during the colder months. I also take up painting, though the winter climate often poses a challenge. Listening to music and engaging in culinary experiments (albeit sparingly) have been other ways to pass the time. However, the primary concern is the excessive amount of time spent in inactivity. I often find myself sitting idle, much like a hibernating bear, struggling to find meaningful ways to use this time.

Returning to Books

Despite the lack of study, I had initiated a pre-session reading plan in November, focusing on standard books for three subjects in PDF format. My goal was not to merely cram terminologies but to understand their meanings in-depth. Unfortunately, life’s interruptions, such as the state round counseling procedures in November and December, derailed this plan. The material I covered in 15-20 days vanished as I no longer revisited the books.

My current laptop, being of medium to low specifications, struggles with startup times. This bottleneck led to further procrastination, and as the days passed, I found myself making excuses and never getting back to the reading process. Today, however, I have decided to make a concerted effort. I have purchased hard copies of the necessary books and am in the process of acquiring more from seniors. Plans are in place to dedicate at least two hours of serious study time until my college session kicks off. I hope to maintain this commitment and ensure a smooth start to the academic year.

The Role of Friends in Preparation

Amid the preparation, the involvement of friends also plays a significant role. Conversations with friends range from serious discussions to fun and playful leg-pulling. These interactions help maintain a balance between studying and maintaining social connections. The support of friends also extends to sharing resources; I’ve had a lengthy conversation with a 2019 senior who is generously providing extra books she purchased and never read.

Conclusion

The journey from the final phase of school to the start of university is a crucial period. Utilizing this time effectively can ensure a smoother transition and a more successful academic experience. By setting clear goals, maintaining motivation, and leveraging the support of friends, it is possible to make the most of the pre-session time.
