For many years, the common perception has been that PhD holders are best suited for research and development (RD) positions. However, this is not always the case. In fact, after my PhD, I discovered a fascinating career path in the business world.

A Pivot to Management Consulting

My career took an unexpected turn when I was not able to secure a job in RD. Despite the scarcity of RD job opportunities, I found myself in a new role in management consulting right after completing my PhD. This transition was quite challenging, as I needed to learn new business skills from scratch. Yet, I embraced the challenge and grew immensely through various assignments.

Unearthing Business Insights

During my tenure in management consulting, I immersed myself in the intricacies of the business world. Some of the key tasks that I undertook during this period were:

Market Research: Conducting extensive studies to understand market trends, customer behaviors, and competitive landscapes. Competitive Analysis: Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of competitors to gain a competitive edge. Formulating Corporate Strategies: Developing comprehensive plans for organic and inorganic growth, encompassing both short-term and long-term goals.

Transitioning to Sales

After working for some time in management consulting, I found myself intrigued by another aspect of business: sales. An opportunity arose when a mutual friend, who was engaged in business development (BD) for the company, referred me for a sales position. This referral opened up a new chapter in my professional life where I applied my analytical skills to drive business growth in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Continuing in Sales: A Role in Tech-Driven Industries

My transition to the sales department has been both exciting and rewarding. In the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, I have been responsible for:
