While solid-state amplifiers can produce hard clip when driven beyond their linear range, tube amplifiers offer a softer clipping effect, which although still present, is less noticeable. This is partly due to how tube amplifiers clip sooner and the filtering action of the output transformers which can remove some of the high-frequency hash.

Some enthusiasts firmly believe that tube amplifiers sound better, particularly when used in situations where the signal is pushed into clipping. However, tubes do come with their own set of drawbacks. They are significantly more expensive and can wear out over time. Maintenance is also a consideration, and for many models, effects are often implemented using digital solid-state components. When approaching clipping, tube amplifiers primarily produce second and third harmonics, as opposed to the odd high-order harmonics generated by solid-state amplifiers, which can be more fatiguing.

Some tube amplifiers utilize the back EMF (electromotive force) to increase the sound stage envelopment and size, improving depth. Tubes are also less likely to produce unwanted glare in the mid-range and can create a more balanced audio experience.

While this issue is not unique to tube amplifiers (solid-state amplifiers can also become hot), proper ventilation is crucial to maintain optimal performance and safety.
