Adaptive and Intelligent Control Systems in Industrial Engineering: Opportunities and Resources for PhD Students

Are you a PhD candidate in Industrial Engineering with a focus on adaptive and intelligent control systems? If so, this article is for you. I am a graduate of Electrical Engineering with a PhD in Coordinated Control of AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles), and I have had extensive experience in adaptive and intelligent control systems. My work has influenced the development of control and propulsion systems for large ships, combining advanced control techniques with real-world applications. In this article, I will provide insights on current research opportunities and resources in my region, as well as some suggestions for prospective PhD students in this field.

Current Research Opportunities and Resources

One of the leading institutions for research in this area is the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) at the University of Zagreb (UniZG) in Croatia. FER is one of the top-performing schools in the region and offers robust opportunities for studying adaptive and intelligent control systems. The faculty is organized into several major groups that focus on these areas:

Laboratory for Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems (LARICS)

Lead by Professors Zdenko Ková? and Stjepan Bogdan, this laboratory is dedicated to the study of robotic systems and intelligent control. Prof. Bogdan served as the head of my PhD thesis committee, which highlights his expertise and the high standards of research expected at FER. Key publications and research results from this group can be found in the bibliographies of both professors, providing valuable insights into the cutting-edge work being done in this field.

Center for Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS)

This center, led by Professors Ivan Petrovi?, Mato Bati?, and Mario Vaak, focuses on advanced cooperative systems. Their research activities relate closely to adaptive and intelligent control, making them a valuable resource for PhD students interested in these areas. The professors' publications provide a comprehensive overview of current research and developments in this field.

Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LABUST)

As the head of my own lab, LabUST, led by Professors Zoran Vuki? and Nikola Mi?eti?, I have witnessed firsthand the integration of adaptive and intelligent control systems in underwater vehicle systems. The research conducted here has significantly contributed to the development of robust and efficient control systems for both underwater and terrestrial applications.

Research Bibliographies

To give you a better understanding of the research being conducted, I have provided links to the following bibliographies:

Prof. Vuki?’s bibliography Prof. Mi?eti?’s bibliography Prof. Ková?’s bibliography Prof. Bogdan’s bibliography Prof. Petrovi?’s bibliography Prof. Bati?’s bibliography Prof. Vaak’s bibliography

Additionally, each entry in these bibliographies includes icons linking to major academic databases, where publications are available either open access or behind a paywall.

Conclusion

The field of adaptive and intelligent control systems in Industrial Engineering offers numerous exciting opportunities for research and development. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb provides a strong foundation for PhD students interested in these areas. By leveraging the expertise of leading professors and the cutting-edge research being conducted, you can pursue groundbreaking work that has real-world applications in a variety of industries.
